50 miles of coastline
Can one tire of seeing the sea? If it’s possible, it certainly happens in Gotland. The island, so beautifully framed by the Baltic Sea and its forms.
A few hours’ boat journey from the mainland, you’ll find Gotland. The island, which for numerous generations has been somewhat of a haven for sunbathing during the delightful summer vacation. Over the years, more and more people have discovered this pearl of the Baltic Sea, visited annually by over 300,000 holidaymakers. Everyone probably can’t be wrong, so we firmly believe that a trip to Gotland is something truly unique.
Whether you depart from the south or the north, it doesn’t really matter. The boat journey of just over three hours usually flies by, and then you’re ready for whatever adventure you choose. Regardless of whether you head north, south, or even west, the coastline often steals the show. Starting your stay by visiting Visby, the medieval city, is often preferred. It solidifies the feeling of being abroad. Because that’s what it actually feels like. Visby’s characteristic streets with plenty of ancient remains, ruins, and quirky houses stimulate the senses of young and old alike.
Living in or directly adjacent to Visby’s city center can be a bit tricky both in terms of availability and price.
CAMPING NEAR VISBY
Kneippbyn Resort is just a Gotlandic stone’s throw (3km) from Visby and actually has the island’s only five-star camping. Every summer, Kneippbyn Resort Visby is the starting point and the kick-off for a truly wonderful holiday on Gotland. A few days, a longer weekend, a week, or maybe a whole season? It really doesn’t matter.
– I think most people choose us at Kneippbyn Resort because we have everything, really. There’s just nothing you need that we don’t have,” says Kneippbyn’s booking manager, Linda Bratt.
And indeed, there’s a substantial range of offerings for those who choose Kneippbyn on Gotland.
In everyday speech, Kneippbyn is perhaps best known for its two amusement parks, the Summerland and Waterland, which have annually evolved to become among Sweden’s best and most visited amusement parks. When the sun is scorching, it’s perfect to stretch out on a sunbed or take a dip in the newly built Lagunen. For those with a bit more energy, there are plenty of slides tailored for different ages, promising butterflies in the stomach. When tired of water between the toes, the Sommarland awaits with Pippi and Villa Villekulla at the center. Gotland’s largest theater, the ‘Pippiteatern,’ plays daily during Kneippbyn’s peak season.
At Summerland, you’ll also find the roller coaster Kalkracet, trampolines, a flying boat, lotteries, and lots of other fun activities.
The proximity creates security
Kneippbyn Resort Visby is a large facility but cleverly planned so that distances feel small. When guests staying at Kneippbyn’s campsite have settled in, children often move freely between the amusement parks. When it’s time for a snack, lunch, or perhaps a little coffee break, it’s close to their caravan for a ‘necessary’ break. If you don’t want to prepare your own food, there are of course several restaurants and cafes on the premises.
FULLY EQUIPPED SERVICE HOUSES
For the comfort of camping guests, there are two well-equipped service houses with kitchens, showers, toilets, and laundry facilities. If you have a four-legged friend, it is also welcome at Kneippbyn’s camping area, which is directly adjacent to the hiking area of Högklint. To the south lies Södra Hällarna, which often provides a magical backdrop for morning or evening walks.
Excursions are fun
Even though Kneippbyn’s camping has everything, it’s of course fun to get away sometimes. Small excursions are a must when camping on Gotland. Many choose to bring their bikes, and indeed it’s convenient to get around with a bike during Gotland’s summer months.
Starting from Kneippbyn, you can reach Tofta beach in just 20 minutes. There, several kilometers of sandy beach stretch out. In recent years, significant investments have been made in the areas around the beach, and you can, for example, have lunch right on the beach. Tofta suits both families with children and more senior couples.
INNER HARBOR
If you head towards Visby instead, the tourist hotspot “Inner Harbor” is recommended. It’s by no means a hidden gem, but still a very cozy outing. Choose from 1000 types of ice cream at the well-known Glassmagasinet and then continue to Almedalen, take a stroll along the beach promenade, and visit the beautiful Botanical Garden on the way back. As a little bonus, you’ll also find the Love Gate.
There are several campsites around Gotland, and for those who want to explore some of the amazing nature reserves, there are ample opportunities.
Come whenever you want
The one who has visited Gotland before or is in the process of booking for the first time can quickly realize that the summer ferry schedule offers some departures during odd hours. Perhaps the ferry departs in the middle of the night or there’s a gap between check-out and departure. At Kneippbyn Resort, there are camping sites for just that purpose.
– We simply want to make things as easy as possible for our guests, concludes Linda Bratt.
