For as long as we can remember, Gotland has been an excellent choice for campers. Whether the term "camper" is still used is unclear, but it has probably been renewed and refined in recent years. Regardless of how you like to spend your vacation or what type of traveler you consider yourself to be, camping has once again become increasingly popular.
Perhaps we dream ourselves back to the summers of our childhood, with their damp mornings and small spirit stoves where simple but oh-so-tasty dinners were prepared.
It doesn't matter if our memories are somewhat vague and, in some cases, embellished. Reliving good memories almost always leads to something nice—albeit in its own way.
Kneippbyn Resort has been welcoming guests since the early 1900s. It started out as a health resort founded by Dr. Kallenberg. Over time, the resort has developed at an impressive pace, and today Kneippbyn is ranked as one of Sweden's most popular destinations and is Gotland's only five-star campsite. It also has the largest number of camping pitches.
- Camping has always been a central part of our business, and we want to be the best camping option on Gotland, says Kneippbyn owner and CEO Bobbo Werkelin.
Kneippbyn came into the possession of the Werkelin family in the mid-1970s, and since then the family has refined both the facility and the location.
- It's so cool to take your morning walk around the site, meet happy guests, and check out the countless solutions that all the inventive campers have brought with them to make their day perfect. It's something I both appreciate and value highly, says Bobbo.
Why do you think Kneippbyn's campsite in Visby has become so popular?
First of all, it's important to remember that we are experienced and have been working with this resort for a long time. That said, it's not a given that something will be appreciated, but we have always been, and continue to be, attentive to our guests and try to be responsive to what we can do to make their experience as complete as possible.
Are you a camper yourself?
- We actually own a motorhome and enjoy going on little trips. We often stay close to home on Gotland, but we have also embarked on longer adventures.
Crazy affordable & modern service buildings
Camping on Gotland and in Kneippbyn is affordable. The service and range of facilities are excellent, regardless of whether you choose to come with a tent, caravan, or motorhome. Most sites have a view of the sea and the sunset, which is by far the most popular subject for holiday photos on Gotland every year. Just around the corner, there are also fully equipped and spacious service buildings, which create much-needed space.
During the pre- and post-season, admission to Kneippbyn's very popular amusement parks, Summer and Waterland, is also included.
The starting price can be as low as SEK 100 per person per night when staying in a tent. All the fun water slides and activities are included.
"We want to make it possible for everyone to visit and experience Kneippbyn and Gotland. The early and late seasons are generally a very good time to visit Gotland. Basically, everything on the island is open, and you can have the island a little more to yourself," Bobbo explains.
Gotland, the food mecca
High-quality food and restaurant experiences have become the island's hallmark in recent years, and regardless of taste, there are several gems in Gotland's gastronomy. Right next door, you will find:
Lilla Bjers
which is very dedicated to working with home-grown organic ingredients. A concept that has taken the business into the real big leagues. In 2022, the restaurant was named: "Best organic restaurant in the EU 2022". Lilla Bjers is located in Västerhejde. It takes only a few minutes to get there by bike from Kneippbyn.
Within Visby's city walls,
Surfers
has established itself as a top choice for those who appreciate Chinese cuisine with flavors from Sichuan.
Bakfickan
is considered by many to be in a league of its own when it comes to seafood delicacies. The restaurant has only a few seats, creating an intimate experience where guests are very close to the kitchen.
If you like classics and the slightly more traditional Gotland experience,
Värdshuset Lindgården
is the obvious choice. In summer, you can sit in the beautiful park surrounded by mulberry and walnut trees. A quick look in the gin room is also usually a popular stop.
If you want to head for the northeastern part of the island,
Bonden och Bönorna
is a real hidden gem. Perhaps not widely known, but oh so appreciated.

Children's Gotland
Kneippbyn's offerings for children are often described as perfect. Even outside Summer and Waterland , the resort Waterland a variety of fun activities. If you want to play sports, there are padel courts, a beach volleyball court, outdoor table tennis, a pump track, a tennis court, basketball hoops, and the opportunity to play field hockey. In other words, there is something for everyone who enjoys sports activities. The facility also has a classic playground and a well-equipped outdoor gym.
Kneippbyn is part of the small community of Vibble. For younger children, there is an exciting and well-hidden troll trail. Maps are available at the service desk.
If the weather is bad for any reason, there are smaller swimming pools, bowling alleys, and other alternatives.
