The best beaches on Gotland

Travel guide

Is it possible to pick a winner for the most popular association with a truly wonderful vacation? Perhaps it's not that simple, and only you can answer the question of what exactly constitutes a "vacation" for you. Regardless, sun and swimming are a big part of a summer vacation on Gotland. With around 800 kilometers of coastline and beaches stretching up to five kilometers, a refreshing dip is always close at hand. There are many swimming experiences to choose from, and you can easily choose between a white, shallow sandy beach with soft sand or a slightly more barren natural experience right next to the distinctive rauks. Our list of favorites includes both hidden gems and more well-known alternatives.

Tofta Beach

An idyllic sandy beach that stretches for several kilometers. What's more Water is shallow Water you can choose when you're ready to take the plunge.

The beach is divided into three areas.
In the northern part, you will find the classic beach guesthouse with simple refreshments. If we may venture a guess, this is the Gotlanders' choice.

Centrally located is Tofta Beach Club with two restaurants, a pool, and activities. The campground and convenience store are also located nearby. In other words, most visitors stay in the area around the beach club.

Surflogiet is located in the southern part. A natural and uncluttered environment where you can eat with sand between your toes. At Surflogiet, you can enjoy a drink and rent equipment to explore the sea.

Sudersand sandy beach, Fårö

Sudersand on Fårö

Sudersand on Fårö really needs no further description. The kilometer-long sand dunes undoubtedly give you the feeling of being abroad. The very popular beach with its soft, smooth sand is appreciated by both visitors and locals. If you want a slightly more secluded bathing experience, we recommend Norsta Auren. Fårö lighthouse is also a nearby attraction that is well worth a visit. The distance from Sudersand is short, and at Norsta Auren, an exciting novel set on Gotland and a lemonade are just the thing. Another well-known and beautiful bathing spot on Fårö is Ekeviken.

Address & travel time from Kneippbyn: Fårövägen 2, 624 62 Fårösund. 60 minutes by car.
To get to Fårö, you need to take the "Fåröfärjan" ferry. The ferry is free of charge, but there can sometimes be long queues.

Nisseviken, approximately 70 km south of Visby

Nisse Bay

Nisseviken is a highlight for those who want to go on a slightly longer trip, about 70 kilometers south of Visby. It is probably Gotland's longest stretch that takes you down to the beach. Surrounded by forest, the beach emerges. If you don't want to lie on the beach, there is a grassy area just above the beach. The bathing area is not very large and is ideal for families with children. You can choose between wading in the shallows until it gets deep or using the bathing jetty. In Nisseviken, you can go windsurfing, and the restaurant has a magical view.

Blue Lagoon – Limestone Quarry

The Blue Lagoon is by far Gotland's most famous limestone quarry, and every year tourists flock here to enjoy the clear blue water surrounded by mighty "stone walls." It's not hard to understand why the lagoon has become so popular, as the environment is truly spectacular and invites both exciting jumps and longer swims. There are also shallow areas so that even younger children can join in. And you might even find a crab or two.
Keep in mind that the Blue Lagoon is sometimes extremely popular, so you need to arrive early to find a parking space.

Pier at Slite Strand, Gotland

Slites Beach

Slite is, at least among locals, a truly underrated beach in northeastern Gotland. Over time, the area has developed with both activities and a wider range of food options. From the bathing bay, you can look out towards Enviken with its now famous fortress. The bathing jetty is long, so you can dip your whole body in at once. Slite's racket center is located right next to the sandy beach, so watch out for tennis balls hitting your hat.

Nearby facilities: Toilets, restaurants, wide range of sports activities, local community with normal amenities. (Photo: Region Gotland).

Ljugarn's sandy beach, Gotland

Ljugarn Beach

For many, Ljugarn is the real watering hole of eastern Gotland. The community, which was once characterized by an old fishing camp, has developed in recent years in terms of both housing and visitor attractions. If you don't want to spend the whole day on the beach, there are many other activities to get involved in, such as padel, tennis, basketball, and more. But when we talk about Ljugarn's beach in particular, it offers beautiful sand dunes, in some places on several levels. It is certainly correct to describe the beach as shallow, and as the beach is relatively narrow, you get a good overview when the children are playing at the water's edge. We have already mentioned that the bathing temperature in Ljugarn is usually really lovely.

Address & travel time from Kneippbyn: Ljugarn. 45 minutes by car.
Nearby facilities: Toilets, restaurants, shop, sports activities. (Photo: Region Gotland).
