Gotland – simple, affordable, and fun

Our passion is to create holiday experiences – something we have been doing since 1907. Holidaying with us at Kneippbyn should be easy, so that you have time for each other and all the fun things there are to experience. Meet Ann, who is responsible for Kneippbyn's guest services.

Every year, thousands upon thousands of visitors choose Gotland to enjoy refreshing swims, magical nature, fun activities, culture, and good food. But what exactly makes Gotland so popular? We had a chat with Ann Blomberg, who is responsible for guest services at Kneippbyn.

You have extensive experience in the tourism industry – what would you say is the main reason why so many people choose Gotland when planning their vacations?

-It's enough that Gotland is a bit like going abroad. The sun shines most of the time and the beaches are really lovely.

An island in the middle of the Baltic Sea that you have to travel to by ferry – how complicated is that really?

-Not complicated at all, I would say. You get to rest during the trip, so that you have the energy to enjoy everything Gotland has to offer.

Kneippbyn Resort is Gotland's largest accommodation facility with over 750 beds and camping. It also has two Parks Summer and Waterland. What makes Kneippbyn so great?

– Quite simple, actually. We have something for everyone, young and old alike.

Of course, we also need to ask how to avoid "tourist traps."

-That's a really good question. Ask aGotlanderfor their best tips on places to visit. There are so many gems on this island. It's also very easy to spot a Gotlander by their dialect.

Finally, can you share a gem that perhaps not everyone knows about?

-There are many beautiful limestone quarries, not just the Blue Lagoon. Why not visit Smöjen or Follingbo limestone quarries?

Tips for traveling on a budget

Want to travel to Gotland as cheaply as possible? Of course you do!

Here are some practical tips that can save you a lot of money.

Choice of season
If you have the opportunity to choose the season, the price is significantly lower than during the peak summer season. Gotland's peak weeks in terms of the number of guests on the island are Monday to Wednesday in week 26, also known as Almedalsveckan. There is then a small gap until the big "industry holiday" begins in week 28. The really high visitor pressure then decreases dramatically just in time for the weekend in week 31. Gotland is in many cases absolutely fantastic even in early and late summer. The wide range of activities, restaurants, nature experiences, and cozy shops usually have generous opening hours even outside the peak weeks. When you choose Kneippbyn resort, admission tickets to the adventure parks are also included during the preseason*.

An uncomfortable ferry ride

Every year, there are lots of great deals that are definitely worth checking out before booking. The biggest discounts are often for the less convenient travel times. Spontaneously, you might not immediately be keen on a night ferry, for example, but in practice it actually works quite well.

If you are traveling with a motorhome or caravan, there are several parking spaces available at Kneippbyn Resort. Perfect for a rest after the ferry. When the reception opens at 8:00 a.m., you can often access your space well before the regular check-in time. If the site is not available, you will of course have access to our service buildings, etc. in the morning.
The parking spaces are also ideal if you are traveling from the island on a late ferry. There are plenty of parking spaces in Visby, and it is usually a popular choice to end your trip with a visit to Visby.

If you arrive late, please let us know so that we can share our best tips for a great start to your vacation.

Book a package tour

Like most destinations, Gotland also offers affordable travel packages with several different focuses. Booking a travel package is usually preferable from a financial standpoint, but it also provides security under the Package Travel Act if, contrary to expectations, something should go wrong. You can find our best package deals here. The packages also serve as excellent inspiration when planning your trip.

Standard of accommodation

At Kneippbyn, we offer accommodation in four categories: holiday cottages, hotels, B&Bs, and camping. All accommodation categories include a range of accommodation options in different standards and price ranges. This makes it easy for you as a guest to choose how much of your holiday budget you want to spend on accommodation. If you are a "brave" camper, you can actually stay from SEK 190 per night. Regardless of which type of accommodation suits you and your family best, we offer affordable options.

Smart savings tips at Kneippbyn

*Entrance tickets to Summer and Waterland if you stay with us during any of the following periods: May 22-24, May 29-31, June 5-7, and August 21-23.

*Always the best price on admission to Summer and Waterland during peak season.

*Choose self-catering and have the opportunity to prepare breakfast, lunch, snacks, and perhaps even dinner on your own. All accommodations are very close to the adventure parks, so it's easy to take a short break to recharge your batteries in the cabin.

*Grill your own lunch at Summerland. Our grills are lit during lunchtime – perfect for a hot dog.

*The barbecue area by the beach. Don't miss our magical barbecue area by the beach. There is plenty of seating and a view that is truly difficult to describe. An evening barbecue is definitely a hot tip.

*Free training. Our well-equipped outdoor gym is at your disposal from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you want to go for a walk or a run, the Södra Hällarna nature reserve is just around the corner. A unique nature experience where the barren landscape meets greenery. Did we forget to mention that during high season, guided training sessions are included several days a week?

*Morning swim. Starting the day with a refreshing swim and relaxing on a sunbed is a favorite activity for many. Morning swims are always included for guests staying at Kneippbyn. During high season, evening swims are also included.

Free & nice on Gotland

There are a plethora of free activities to enjoy on the island.

A day at the beach is pretty much synonymous with vacation. Gotland's coastline is fantastic, and two popular beaches within reasonable distance of Kneippbyn are Tofta Strand and Norderstrand. The former is one of the island's most famous beaches, while the latter can be likened to a "city beach."

Almedalen, the beach promenade, and the botanical garden are also favorites for a cozy moment. In addition to the oft-photographed pond, Almedalen also has a newly renovated playground. Right next door is the Almedalsbiblioteket library, whose children's section is highly recommended.

Visby's inner harbor is located in the same area, and it's actually fascinating how much fun it can be to look at boats. Large, small, simple, and bombastic—all styles can be found in the harbor.

If you want to experience a little more of Visby, there are several impressive ruins, the crowning glory being St. Mary's Cathedral, which was built more than 800 years ago.

Of course, we have lots more to tell you, but we'll leave it there for now. We hope that some of our tips will come in handy and look forward to welcoming you to Summer!

How much does it cost to stay at Kneippbyn?
Of course, it varies a little depending on when you visit us, but our strength is that we offer accommodation in all standards and price ranges. You can simply choose how you want to allocate your vacation budget between accommodation and entertainment. When you stay with us, you always get the best price for the Summer and Waterland experiences. Below you will find price examples for a number of different accommodation options during different parts of the season.

Small camping plot

Kneippbyn's five-star campsite is located next to Kneippbyn's Summer& Waterland. The campsite is beautifully situated by the sea just south of Visby. Two modern service buildings with all facilities such as kitchens, showers, toilets, and laundry facilities are available for campsite guests.

Just north of the campsite, between Kneippbyn and Visby, there are beautiful nature and walking areas. Pets are welcome at Kneippbyn's campsites.

Kneippbyn is Gotland's only 5-star campsite and offers a total of 200 bookable camping pitches for caravans, motorhomes, and tents, most of which have sea views.

Price example for June: SEK 360/night.

Price example for July: SEK 515/night.

Gotska Sandön

At Kneippbyn's bed and breakfast just outside Visby, larger groups can stay together in simpler accommodation. If you have a full schedule and accommodation is not the most important part of your vacation, but rather experiencing Gotland and Kneippbyn, then this is the perfect option. Simple bedrooms with showers and toilets in a nearby service building.

Price example for June: SEK 1,155/night.

Price example for July: SEK 1,255/night.

Smöjen

These are among the newest cottages built in Kneippbyn and offer a higher level of comfort. The 32-square-meter vacation cottage is very cleverly designed to feel much larger. The kitchen has all the amenities you could wish for, including a stove and dishwasher. There is also a large veranda with an awning facing the sea, equipped with garden furniture. Here you can enjoy all the long summer evenings and magical sunsets. Of course, we also have variants that are adapted for accessibility.

Price example for June: SEK 1,695/night.

Price example for July: SEK 2,695/night.

Mobile home

Renting a mobile home on Gotland is just like renting and staying in a summer cottage, with all the facilities you need to enjoy your vacation. Our mobile homes are very comfortable. They have kitchens so you can prepare breakfast and meals during your vacation. If you want to treat yourself, there are restaurants in the area and a convenience store for the simple things you need to supplement your stay. Each mobile home has its own furnished patio. Many of our mobile homes have a magical view of the Baltic Sea and all the beautiful sunsets.

Price example for June: SEK 1,295/night.

Price example for July: SEK 1,995/night.

Cycling vacation on Gotland

A vacation on Gotland without a car – is it possible?

Yes, it works perfectly well without compromising the experience. Within just a few kilometers of the port, you will find everything from Visby's city center to cozy accommodation and wonderful beaches. For some time now, Destination Gotland has been offering a boat bus with six different routes to Nynäs and Oskarshamn. Read more about the boat buses.
To make things as smooth as possible when you arrive in Visby, a little planning is required. What do we want to experience during our stay? Is it Visby's world heritage or cozy excursions that appeal most?

More and more people are choosing to experience Gotland by bike. Perhaps this has something to do with modern electric bikes that help you save energy.

Bicycles can be pre-booked at Gotlandscykeluthyrning, and it takes about 5 minutes to walk from the ferry terminal.

In recent years, the infrastructure for cycle paths has been expanded, and it is actually very easy to get around along the island's west coast. There are also lots of cozy stops if you just want to enjoy the unique nature for a while. Want to discover Gotland by bike? Read our guide here.

Can you manage without a car or bicycle?
Yes, you don't need a car or bicycle to enjoy a wonderful vacation on Gotland. Public transportation runs frequently on the most popular routes. When you stay at Kneippbyn Resort, you will find the nearest bus line in Vibble – the local community located about a five-minute walk from the resort.
During the season, Hop on Hop off transfer tours also run between Kneippbyn and Visby.
For information about current bus lines, click here.

Taxi
During the summer, the number of taxi drivers on the island more than doubles, and unfortunately, extortionate prices are sometimes charged.
If you are traveling without a car or bicycle, we recommend taking a taxi from the ferry terminal to Kneippbyn. It's a convenient start and doesn't cost very much. When traveling by taxi, we highly recommend Taxi Gotland. You can also pre-book a car to be waiting for you upon arrival. Read more at www.taxigotland.se/

We understand that you may have a number of questions – you are always welcome to contact us and we will tell you more.

Haven't traveled by ferry before and want to read a little more about what to expect? Of course, we have lots of useful information to share. Gotland is a short trip away, and the approximately 3-hour ferry ride builds up the mystique of the island, which was once a trading center for the Hanseatic cities.

Here is a selection of frequently asked questions with corresponding answers:

Get your boarding pass online

Three hours before the boat's departure time, a text message and email will be sent to the person who booked the trip. Follow the instructions, and when you are ready, you can download the boarding pass to your mobile phone or print it out. If you are traveling on foot, you will need this to enter the terminal. If there are several people on the same booking, you will receive one email per passenger, so you can easily forward the correct boarding pass to the right person.

Pick up your boarding pass at the terminal

If you choose not to download your boarding pass online, you can visit our check-in machines at the terminal. Enter your booking number on the screen and follow a few simple steps to get your boarding pass. You then show this at the entrance to the boats.

Entry

Boarding for ferries opens no later than 1 hour and 30 minutes before departure and closes 20 minutes before departure.

Access on foot

Once you have checked in via text message or email, as described above, simply scan your boarding pass at the entrance to reach the departure hall. Wait there until it is time to board.

If you are traveling with small children or have a stroller, we welcome you to our manual check-in desk, where we offer personal assistance with check-in.

Please note that the distance from the terminal entrances and exits to the ships is up to 500 meters.

Access by car

If you (and possibly your companions) are traveling by car, you can check in before arriving at the terminal or when you arrive at the check-in counter. When you check in, you will receive boarding passes that may be requested on board.
When checking in by car, all passengers in the car must show their boarding passes at the ticket control. All adults must be able to present valid identification.

Boat bus

Boarding pass

When boarding the bus, you can show your email confirmation from Destination Gotland on your smartphone or bring a printed confirmation with you.

Timetable

You can find the timetable for the boat bus routes by clicking here.

Bus stops

You can find all the boat bus stops by clicking here.

Ticket office opening hours

The ticket offices in the terminals are open when the ferries are running. You can find the current opening hours on the Our ferry terminals page.

Charge your electric car

In collaboration with Mer, we have charging stations for electric cars at both the terminals in Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn. The charging stations are located at the ferry terminal outside the vehicle passage to the ferry. Charging takes approx. 15-30 minutes and costs SEK 5/kWh. A charging card is required for charging.

More information is available onMer's website.

Baggage rules

If you are traveling without a vehicle, check in your luggage at the ferry terminal.

Maximum weight per piece of luggage is 25 kg. Checked luggage must be well packed in a bag or similar and labeled with your name and telephone number.

Only carry-on luggage may be brought into our passenger areas on board (this also applies to compartment seats). Maximum dimensions are 40x50x30 cm. We apply the rules for carry-on luggage for safety reasons.

If you are traveling with luggage containing items such as bottles of liquid, please take extra care when packing before checking in your luggage. Any damage to luggage caused by a broken bottle will not be compensated.

Thank you for following our baggage rules and helping us maintain safety!

Stroller on board

Strollers are permitted in passenger areas on board

Animals on board

Your pet may stay in your personal vehicle during the journey. You will be given the opportunity to check on your pet once during the journey. Always state at check-in if you are traveling with a dog/cat.

If you wish to bring your pet on the passenger deck, you need to book a pet space:

SF1650 – Lounge chair in the Animal Salon.

SF1500 – Reclining chair in the Animal Salon (part of the Front Salon).

The SF1650 and SF1500 also offer a number of animal compartments where dogs and cats are welcome.

Pets are not allowed in other lounges or compartments.

Click here to read the County Administrative Board's general information about animal transport.

Turn off the car alarm during the trip

Car alarms can be activated by vibrations in the ship, and the alarm sound is extremely unpleasant for animals on the car deck. We kindly ask you to turn off your car alarm during the crossing. If you do not know how to turn off the alarm, please read the vehicle manual or google your car brand + turn off car alarm.

Destination Gotland is doing the following to help travelers turn off their car alarms during their journeys:

Three days before the trip, an email is sent out with a request to turn off the alarm during the trip.

During peak season, text messages are sent to motorists reminding them to turn off their alarms.

Horse transporters will be placed on deck 3 as far as possible.

Animal transport – horse on board

Transportation of horses in horse trailers on car decks is permitted on our SF1650 and SF1500 ferries.

Caravans/motorhomes on board

LPG may only be transported in vehicles that have been inspected and approved for this purpose. The main valve of the LPG system must be closed. The container must be easily accessible. The hatch to the container's storage space must be unlocked and marked. This applies throughout the entire crossing and within our terminal areas. In some cases, it may be necessary to dismantle TV antennas and similar equipment.

Bicycle/moped on board

Passengers traveling with a bicycle or class 2 moped should book it as a bicycle/moped.

Passengers traveling with a two-wheeled Class 1 moped (EU moped) should book it as a motorcycle, while a three- or four-wheeled Class 1 moped (EU moped) should be booked as a passenger car.

Bicycles and mopeds are directed to the vehicle entrance. When it is time to board, staff will give instructions on where bicycles/mopeds should be placed during the crossing.

Travelers with allergies

If you have allergies, please contact us for information about the environment on board, such as which seating option is best for you. There are allergy compartments on SF1500 and SF1650. It is not permitted to use perfume or eat nuts or peanuts in the allergy compartments. We recommend that our guests with severe hypersensitivity use these compartments, which can be booked via telephone booking.

The restaurant area always has lactose- and gluten-free options on the menu. Our staff in the restaurant area are happy to help and can recommend suitable options. We always have gluten-free bread and pastries.

Please note that unfortunately we can never guarantee an environment free from allergens.

Passengers with disabilities

Boarding

Please indicate upon arrival if you require special assistance when boarding. Our terminal hosts are ready to assist you. Please note that the distance from the terminal entrances and exits to the ships is up to 500 meters.

At the terminal

Each terminal has a staffed check-in desk specifically for elderly and disabled passengers, marked with the ISA symbol (the international wheelchair symbol).

Passengers requiring assistance are requested to arrive at this location at least 60 minutes prior to the ship's departure.

If you are traveling by car, you can request a parking space close to the elevator if you have reduced mobility. If you require supervision/assistance throughout the journey, we recommend that you bring an accompanying person who can travel free of charge. The companion travels free of charge when proof of the need for an assistant/assistance can be provided. The certificate must be presented at check-in. Tickets can be booked by calling0771-22 33 00.

Click here to read information for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility.

On board

There are toilets on board that are adapted for people with reduced mobility. On SF1650 and SF1500, there are also a number of cabins adapted for people with reduced mobility, which can be booked directly via our online booking system.
